[Links of the Day] 28/05/2020 : Reverse Oauth proxy , Prometheus timeseries backend, Google use machine learning to improve audio chat

  • Oauth Proxy : A reverse proxy that provides authentication with Google, Github or other providers.
  • Zebrium : Prometheus backend project, not sure why you don't want to just export the data from Prometheus into a distributed column-store data warehouse like Clickhouse, MemSQL, Vertica. This gives you fast SQL analysis across massive datasets, real-time updates regardless of order, and unlimited metadata, cardinality and overall flexibility. Maybe because they want to focus on the monitoring / reactive aspect and less on the analytics.
  • Improving Audio Quality with WaveNetEQ : Google uses machine learning to deal with packet loss, jitter, and delays. An interesting bit of info: " 99% of Google Duo calls need to deal with packet losses, excessive jitter or network delays. Of those calls, 20% lose more than 3% of the total audio duration due to network issues, and 10% of calls lose more than 8%."

[Links of the Day] 31/01/2019 : Evidence based management, real time data streams analysis, proxy firewall with deep protocol analysis

  • Evidence-Based Management Guide : agile meet KPI scorecards ... Some interesting concept, but I am wary of the current trends of anything can be solved by X + Z in management...
  • Confluo : real-time distributed analysis of multiple data streams. Confluo simultaneously supports high throughput concurrent writes, online queries at millisecond timescales, and CPU-efficient ad-hoc queries via a combination of data structures carefully designed for the specialized case of multiple data streams, and an end-to-end optimized system design.
  • Zorp : open source proxy firewall with deep protocol analysis. If you want to be nice and cosy on a deep and meaningfull level with your traffic. This is for you. With Zorp you can control, inspect and modify traffic at the application layer.

[Links of the Day] 04/01/2017 : ProxySQL, Smudge Golang lib, Hypervisor costs comparisons

  • ProxySQL : SQL proxy fir MySQL ( or any other fork like Percona and Mariadb) [Github]
  • Smudge : Go library providing group member discovery, status dissemination and failure detection using the SWIM epidemic protocol. This is really cool as provide a building block for an equivalent to consul but with a very low footprint ressource and network wise.
  • Hypervisor costs : interesting comparison of hypervisor solution costs. The surprising number is that contrary to popular belief VMware is not the most expansive but Hyperv is on a apple to apple comparison. However I am not sure that this hold true when you are talking for a complete solution.

Links of the day 08 - 07 - 2015

Links of the day 08/07/2015: Storage tipping point, SSL, reverse proxy, #Container with the virtualization goodies on top ( or under )

  • The Storage Tipping Point -- the performance optimization technologies of the last decade – log structured file systems, coalesced writes, out-of-place updates and, soon, byte-addressable NVRAM – are conflicting with similar-but-different techniques used in SSDs and arrays. The software we use is written for dumb storage; we're getting smart storage; but smart+smart = fragmentation, write amplification, and over-consumption.
  • s2n -- Amazon's open source ssl implementation.
  • pushpin -- a reverse proxy server that makes it easy to implement WebSocket, HTTP streaming, and HTTP long-polling services. It communicates with backend web applications using regular, short-lived HTTP requests (GRIP protocol). This allows backend applications to be written in any language and use any webserver.
  • Hyper : Make VM run like Container. Fast as Container, Isolated by VM. Intersting approach, Upon the RUN command, Hyper launches a new VM instance, instead of containers, and mount the specified image onto the instance. Inside to the VM, a minimalist Linux kernel, called HyperKernel, is booted. HyperKernel is built with a tiny Init service, called HyperStart, which creates a Pod, setup Mountnamespace, and launch apps from the loaded image.
